AmHAIRican Horror Story

This weekend I had my hair dyed from blonde (you can see what my hair looked like before by following my Instagram - Mollie & I decided to ditch the gftg Instagram and just use our own accounts. Follow us Here & Here) to what I wanted to be a light brown. Something like this...

Well my hair came out dark brown with A LOT of red. I was beyond freaked out and on the verge of tears. The salon "corrected" it by dying over the red with more brown. It took out some of the red but definitely not all of it. I was there for 6 hours and was having a slight anxiety attack. By the time it was all over I just wanted to get out of there even though I was SO upset and disappointed.

The next day (Saturday) I went to a different salon. The stylist "soap boxed"(?) my hair to lighten it up, and used toner to get rid of the red. To put it lightly, it cost an arm and a leg. She was very sweet and while I was in the salon I really felt like it was lightening up. But as soon as I got home and looked in the mirror, I was convinced that it was still super dark and still pretty red.

I've bought clarifying shampoo that I'm going to continue to use all week. I know colored hair fades but I need to speed it up! Then on Friday (I want to give my hair a break to reduce damaging it) I am getting highlights (I absolutely hate the stripy look of highlights but I'm not sure what else I can do) to lighten up my hair a bit. I'm HOPING the outcome will be something like this...(Can I get her face and body while I'm at it??)

I can't put up a picture of what my hair looks like now because I'm that upset about it - I'm wearing hats and avoiding mirrors because I am so freaked out. I honestly look like a wannabe Kardashian. I feel like I'm wearing a wig & do not feel like myself at all. But I did take a picture while iChatting with my mom, so you can click here to see my dark hair (if you dare).

I know it's just hair and things could be way worse. I'm trying to stay positive but I'm feeling super emotional and just want to cry. Have any of you had a hair crisis like mine? Any suggestions on ways to lighten up my hair or what I should do next would be greatly appreciated!! -O

  1. Dish soap! Wash your hair a few times with Dawn dish soap and it will definitely lighten up. I had a similar incident about five years ago and it was a life saver. I did it immediately after dying it way too dark, so I'm not sure how it will work a few days after, but it's worth a shot!

    1. Thanks for the tip! I've been using Dawn and definitely can see the color fading a bit. I'm just worried it's going to dry out my hair if I use too much. Thanks for your help! xo

  7. I have no advice, only commiseration. I hope you get it fixed, I've had horrible highlights put in after I distinctly said 6 times that I didn't want to look like a zebra so I've been there. Perhaps lemon juice might help lighten it? Definitely ask someone who knows first since it's been through a lot with all the color so maybe shampooing a lot, as you are doing, will be best.

You also might talk to the manager of the salon. If you brought in a photo of what you wanted and they did something totally different, they should have fixed it for free.

If it helps, your hair looks like a nice color in the photo.

    1. Haha that's why highlights scare me! I am afraid of the zebra stripes! I'm so timid when it comes to confrontation - I wish the service would have been free since I was clearly upset. I've learned my lesson about trying new salons I guess. Thank you :)

  8. definitely use the clarifying shampoo frequently and try the dish soap trick. that was my main tip for everyone when i worked at sally's, the oxidation of the bubbles helps to strip the color. it's gonna be pretty drying, so definitely use some deep conditioner without proteins, more of a moisturizing conditioner. it will get better liv! no worries. text me if you need more advice!!!

    1. I've been using dish soap and clarifying shampoo like 3 times a day, I'm terrified my hair is going to start falling out or turn into straw. I'm going to look for a moisturizing conditioner!! Thanks for your help, love! :)

  10. Personally, I think the color looks gorgeous on you....really, and I'm not just saying it! I'm a big fan of dark hair - mine is naturally blonde and I dye it dark brown every month.
